GREENSBORO, NC -- Are you cashing in NC's cheap car insurance?

Nerd Wallet analyzed the average car insurance rates from 150 largest cities in the country. Six of the top 10 cheapest cities in the country were right here in North Carolina: Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Raleigh, Durham, Charlotte and Fayetteville.

The national car insurance average was $1,009.71. North Carolina was 26% less at $808.00. Sounds good. But not everyone is getting these low prices.

John Kuo from Nerd Wallet explains: "For people who have a checkered driving history the penalty is much more in North Carolina. But if you have a clean driving record, then you experience some of the cheapest insurance prices in the country.”

Unlike other states, North Carolina has a point system. If you get moving violations, you're charged points and pay more for insurance. No moving violations, no points and a cheaper rate.
